Matanzas is the western province of Cuba that borders on the west on Havana, to the north on the Strait of the Florida, to the East on Villa Clara. His capital is the city of Matanzas. Knows as " Athens of Cuba "; it is a city rich in cultural events. Also it is said that it is the city of the bridges.

The Province of Matanzas is provided with a population of 677 300 inhabitants and a Surface of 11,978 km ².

The province of Matanzas is one of the provinces with major economical and productive potential of Cuba. The economical fundamental sectors are the Industry, Tourism, Agricultural sector, Construction, Transport and Communications. The biggest contribution of the province to the economy is the tourism, principally in Varadero and the Ciénaga de Zapata, the the biggest and better preserved humedal of the insular Carib. The contribution of this branch to the economy is between 30 and 40 per cent of the income in freely convertible currency. The tourist complex of Varadero is provided with about 11 956 tourist rooms and 23 891 jobs, with the presence of 2 986 171 tourists, of them 95,6 per cent proceeding from the foreigner.

Matanzas has very good road communication with the city of Havana through the national Freeway and the White Route and with the rest of the country by means of the National Freeway, the Central highway and the North Circuit.

His principal attractions tourist are:

• The beach of Varadero, that with his 20 km from beaches of excellent quality and his hotel infrastructure and of services of all kinds it is the most important second tourist destination of Cuba.
• Also they are places that deserve to be visited the cities of Matanzas, called also the City of the Bridges, and Cárdenas.
• San Miguel de los Baños where a spa of medicinal waters exists
• The Vale of the Yumurí in the outskirts of the city of Matanzas and the Caves of Bellamar
• The Nature reserve of the Ciénaga de Zapata, the biggest humedal of the whole region of the Carib and of big interest for the lovers of the tourism of nature. In the Ciénaga de Zapata they are, also, the Lagoon of the Treasure, famous between the lovers of the fishing for his trouts and where there has been reproduced a village taína, Playa Larga and Playa Girón, of good quality and historical interest, on the Bay of Cochinos.
