The province of Las Tunas arises with the new political and administrative division composed by 14 provinces and a special municipality. The name of Las Tunas has his history In the western part of the current municipality of Las Tunas pears the Cuban natives constituted almost four centuries ago the cacicazgo of Cueibá. In the year 1603 the Herd of Las Tunas already existed in the zone of the ancient cacicazgo, called this way by the possibilities that there was offering the place for the baby and development of dairy cattle, flat, zone fertile and rich in abundant grasslands, where the species of plants was growing xerófitas known popularly by prickly pears.

Considering the possibilities that the region was offering, in the second half of the XVIIth century there settled in it a man so-called don Diego Clemente de Rivera, who constructed corrals for the baby of animals. Also, it created the conditions so that other breeders were using it in his step towards the most oriental zone, fundamentally to Bayamo. For then the region begun to be known by San Gregorio of Las Tunas.

With the step of the years, and like facilitating the name of the place, met for Corrals of Las Tunas, until at the end of the XVIIIth, and considering the political existing division, it was called The Prickly pears of Bayamo.

With this name the first half of the XIXth passed, and already in full campaign emancipadora, on August 16, 1869, the forces of general Manuel de Quesada attacked the city, and when it was practically in his power, this one decided to move back before the astonishment of his followers. This fact gave cause that the Spanish were considering to be the battle as a victory of his weapon and they gave him the name of Victoria de Las Tunas. In this frustrated attempt to take the city there took part with the rebellious forces Vicente García, the patriot ensign of the region. And he is not until 1975 in which the Revolution gives the current name of Las Tunas to the province and to his capital, from a new division a politician - administrative carried out for then.

Las Tunas there is a province that at present has little developed the tourist sector but this does not mean that lacks attractions for the tourist who wants to know the country, especially on the north coast.

His principal attractions of tourist interest are:

• Beach Covarrubias to the northwest of the locality of Puerto Padre, with accommodation.
• Several small but beautiful beaches and of good quality in coves on the north coast.
• Puerto Padre, an attractive village that is provided with a singular levee and is full of history, exists accommodation in private houses of rentals. In the surroundings there can be visited the beaches The Llanita and The Herradura and there exists an ancient Spanish fortress (Fuerte La Loma), at present National Monument.
• The city of Las Tunas, a bucolic city of provinces with some interesting museums.
• The Hill Caisimú, to approximately 20 km to the north of the city and where it is possible to practise the sports hunting.
